Who They Are

The George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center (Sutton Center) was founded in 1983 with the mission of “finding cooperative conservation solutions for birds a

nd the natural world through science and education.” The Sutton Center is a private, nonprofit organization located near Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

What They Do

The Sutton Center is a leader in avian research and conservation though conducting intensive, conservation-oriented, ecological field research on declining grassland birds, developing and applying techniques for the reintroduction and monitoring of Southern Bald Eagles, managing the successful captive breeding of endangered species and performing bird surveys in Oklahoma and across the world.

Birds are widely recognized as environmental barometers.  Given their wide ranges, fast metabolism and high energy requirements, they respond more rapidly than most living things to changes in the environment.  Thus, variations in the populations of bird species provide important signals of environmental well-being.  This reality is the foundation of the Center’s work.

The fact is… people only care about things they understand. Research explores the unknowns of biology. Conservation preserves the diversity around us. But in order to engage the public in the importance of the Research and Conservation mission of the Sutton Center… EDUCATION is vital!

The Sutton Center is launching a new program that will focus on educating young people, however, it can be just as eye opening for adults too! Regarding this new program-

  • They have just acquired golden pheasant chicks- these little ones will be beautiful adults and will help with conversations about biodiversity and invasive species. They have already warmed up to people and are on their way to being great animal ambassadors! Follow their journey on Facebook and Instagram at #pheasantsofsutton
  • Their young great horned owl is currently in training. This majestic bird will amaze and inspire people of all ages. Follow #suttoncenter on Facebook and Instagram for updates on its arrival!
  • Stella the skunk has a spunky attitude and is ADORABLE! Stella can teach us about the misunderstood wildlife living in our own backyard. Follow her journey on Facebook and Instagram at #suttonskunk.
